Royal Playlist

The “Royal Playlist” Program will transport you to a time when live music served the role of today’s playlists – collections of pieces that could be arranged according to personal preferences and played repeatedly. In the 18th century, music was an integral part of daily life at the royal court, accompanying both official ceremonies and private life. Just as we create playlists today to showcase our musical tastes, kings and aristocrats had their favorite fashionable pieces and preferred performers.

We will present works composed by royal kapellmeisters: Johann Adolf Hasse and Johann David Heinichen, whose compositions were certainly “added to favorites” by the royal court. Johann Adolf Hasse was considered by his contemporaries to be one of the greatest composers of the era. The music he created during his over 80-year life accompanied Polish nobility throughout almost the entire 18th century. In 1731, Augustus II appointed Hasse as the royal Polish and electoral Saxon kapellmeister. After the king’s death, the composer continued his service at the Dresden-Warsaw court of Augustus III, visiting Warsaw several times for the performances of his operas. He also composed on commission for King Stanisław August. Johann David Heinichen, on the other hand, was Hasse’s predecessor as the royal Polish kapellmeister of Augustus II.

We invite you to discover the musical treasures of the 18th century and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the royal court in Warsaw.
