About the program

We present the work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart within the fascinating context of his familial and musical connections, as well as mutual inspirations. The program opens with a piece in which the presence of the composer's father, Leopold, is still strongly felt. It was likely Leopold who encouraged his teenage son to rearrange a sonata by his favorite composer, Johann Christian Bach, into a chamber piano concerto. In the surviving manuscript, Leopold wrote out the basso continuo part, leaving the other voices to be developed by the teenager.

The next piece, written by a mature Wolfgang Amadeus, also has an intriguing history. The Rondo KV 494 was originally composed as a standalone work; a few years later, it served as the third movement of the Sonata in F major. But what happened to the original draft of that third movement? A fragment abandoned after just 16 bars survived, and years later, the composer's son, Franz Xaver, picked it up—transforming it into a Rondo in F major written in his own individual style. Today a nearly forgotten composer, Franz Xaver was a prominent figure in the musical life of Lviv during the early 19th century. His finest pupil, Julia Baroni-Cavalcabó, chose one of the most recognizable opera duets by her musical "grandfather" Wolfgang—"Là ci darem la mano" from Don Giovanni—as the theme for her first opused composition.

The evening is rounded off with music by Johann Samuel Schröter, a German pianist and composer celebrated in London. His style made such a profound impression on Mozart that he wrote his own cadenzas for Schröter’s concertos. Thus, the program is bookended by early piano concertos performed with the accompaniment of a salon-style "mini-orchestra": two violins and a cello.

The Early Music Festival – Persona Grata is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund as part of the "Music" program, implemented by the National Institute of Music and Dance.
